A company has extended Dynamics 365 Sales with an ISV product.

You need to recommend a solution.
What should you recommend?

  • A. Create a managed solution with the components that you need to extend.
  • B. Update the business logic of the ISV to meet the needs of the company.

So I think when the question says "the ISV locked the product" it means the product is delivered as a managed solution (as intended by Microsoft when distributing), so that means whenever you would like to customize any logic that came managed into your system you need to create a new (unmanaged) solution, add the desired components and edit them in order achieve your specific requirements. I have done this before several times.

C and D are definitely the two better choices, but I think D, the given answer is correct because the client has EXTENDED the product, which implies that this is not normally logic that is solved with out of the box functionality which an unmanaged solution would provide. Also, an unmanaged solution is less desirable to a managed extension with another ISV.

C is correct. Extending Dynamics with ISV says that the logic needs an ISV. The ISV is not enough so we can extend it but not extending the Dynamics. D is incorrect for it is not possible to be removed when the contractual obligation ends.

Why do you assume the need for removal ? The customer wasn't happy with the ISV solution that's why locking came to picture, but if the unmanaged + ISV solves it then why would they still uninstall something already paid for ?

For my the correct answer is C becouse you dont should make changes a third party solution. You may lose support guarantees and future updates. For my the best practice is other ISV.

I supposed C is correct: 1- ISV means Independent Software Vendor but we use the ISV term for the ZIP file with the ISV managed solution... Let's call it ISV_SOL1.. 2- The Customer should use the ISV_SOL1 solution because of contractual constraints. Locked product means it is a managed solution that cannot be modified. 3- in this scenario, the Idependent Software Vendor should creates a secondary managed solution (Let's call it ISV_SOL2) to resolve the additional business logic gaps. 4- The final coverage of business needs will be an union of the ISV_SOL1 and ISV_SOL2. Make sense?

Microsoft are strongly recommending unmanaged for internal use. So, it is correct that the ISV provided this as a managed, but the fix will be based on unmanaged

A: if you create a managed solution, later you will have headaches to remove dependencies. B. You cannot update the business logic of the ISV. We have a locked product. C. Why would you create another ISV? You just need to add the additional logic. D. Yes, this is the answer. Add the components required and add your business logic to your solution. Because it is unmanaged you avoid creating lock-outs due to dependencies.

But how will you create a managed solution. You will create an unmanaged solution and later import as managed in production. This is what I think you meant to.
