Mapping is always automatic. The visualization shows the automatically generated mapping which you can modify. You use the 'Generate Source Mapping' functionality only if you have changed the contents of the import file to re-generate a mapping.

Selected Answer: B
B. Generate source mapping. This is a correct answer because generating source mapping is a feature that allows you to automatically map the fields between the source and target data entities based on the field names and data types. This feature can save you time and effort when you migrate data from a legacy application to Dynamics 365 Finance. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/sysadmin/optimize-data-migration

According to Microsoft’s documentation, the mapping visualization tool shows the automatically generated mapping which you can modify. Mapping is always automatic. You use the ‘Generate Source Mapping’ functionality only if you have changed the contents of the import file to re-generate a mapping. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/data-entities/data-entities-data-packages https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customerengagement/on-premises/customize/map-entity-fields?view=op-9-1

Generate source mapping is used to return the mapping to its original generation if incorrect, almost as a "return to default mapping". As the question states "As a starting point,...." I'm assuming that this is the first mapping which is done "automatically" on setup and is only visible through the Mapping visualization tool. As the question also reference fields which are different from the legacy application, these could not be mapped using the Generate source mapping tool and we have to use the mapping in the Mapping visualization tool to handle these too. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/data-entities/data-entities-data-packages?toc=%2Ffin-and-ops%2Ftoc.json#regenerate-a-map

The right answer is B, because in the question it's stated that some fields are the same some are different, and with the Generate source mapping you accomplish that.

I quote from the provided link: "View mapping To view how an entity is mapped, locate the tile for the entity in the project, and then click View map. We provide mapping visualization view (default) and mapping details view. A red asterisk (*) identifies any required fields in an entity. These fields must be mapped in order to work with the entity. Other fields can be unmapped as required when working with the entity. To unmap a field, highlight the field in either column (Entity or Source), click Delete selection, and then click Save. After saving, close the form to return to the project. The field mapping from source to staging can also be edited after import using the same process." Thus A is incorrect as the visual mapping tool allow manual changes. Mapping occurs automatically

you can customize the mapping before import the entity. In this way you can have a default customized mapping that allows you to have all field mapped automatically when import the entityi file itself https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/data-entities/data-entities-data-packages?toc=%2Ffin-and-ops%2Ftoc.json#mapping
