Just a comment. The Period "Days" refers to the default value. It is irrelevant to the question (just not to be confused)

Create Quick Measure always helps in creating the Calculation ( if you are learning DAX ) Question needed Avg Sales over Month. Hence Base Values = Total Sales Date = Date ( Knowing the date Lookup) Period = Months ( As Month is required)

the setup shows that "period before" is 1 and "period after" is 0 so should that sound more reasonable to be rolling by year (if the requirement is rolling by 12 month)?

the answer is correct . The 1 in "Periods before" means that we take one previous month to calculate the average of the current month , to calculate the average : (Current month +( current month -1) ) / 2
