Exam 70-741 topic 1 question 19 discussion

Actual exam question from Microsoft's 70-741
Question #: 19
Topic #: 1
[All 70-741 Questions]

Your company has two main offices. The offices are located in London and Seattle. All servers run Windows Server 2016.
In the Seattle office, you have a Distributed File System (DFS) server named FS1. FS1 has a folder named Folder1 that contains large Windows image files.
In the London office, you deploy a DFS server named FS2, and you then replicate Folder1 to FS2.
After several days, you discover that the replication of certain files failed to complete.
You need to ensure that all of the files in Folder1 can replicate to FS2.
What should you do?

  • A. Modify the disk quota of the drive that contains Folder1.
  • B. From a command prompt, run dfsutil /purgemupcache.
  • C. Create a quota for Folder1 by using File Server Resource Manager (FSRM).
  • D. Modify the size of staging area of Folder1.

I'm not sure about the solution here. What should the quota on Folder1 achieve apart from keeping the folder size within certain boundaries. For me the staging area seems to be a much better fit as some of the Windows images are defined as large files. https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askds/2011/07/13/how-to-determine-the-minimum-staging-area-dfsr-needs-for-a-replicated-folder/

D. Got this one in the exam yesterday, the staging directory is too small. The large files will eventually replicate as DFS breaks them down into smaller chunks to fit into the staging directory but depending on the size and speed of the link it could take months. The destination directory will temporarily expand to patch the large file together then purge itself to stay under the limit. If the large files change often at the source they will never replicate.

I am leaning towards that the provided answer might be correct, because if you check your 70-741 Exam ref book on page 268, in FSRM, properties of the folder, replication tab, it has a Quota (in megabytes) option

which obviously means that you can alter the size of the staging folder, thus enabling more/larger files to be staged at the same time without disrupting replication

the included image on page 268 also has an information icon that reads: To size the staging folder quota large enough to prevent replication from slowing or stopping, you must take into account the size of the files to be replicated.

D. Increasing the staging size of files will increase the performance of replication. Prior to Server 2016, DFS Replication used hard-coded 256KB file size to determine staging requirements. If a file size were larger than 256KB. that file would be staged before it replicated. The more file staging that you have, the longer replication takes on a DFS System.

I think the answer is correct. Staging affects the performance of the replication by using RDC. File Server Resource Manager has the option : Quota management Quota management allows you to limit the space that is allowed for a volume or folder, and they can be automatically applied to new folders that are created on a volume. You can also define quota templates that can be applied to new volumes or folders. Source : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/fsrm/fsrm-overview

If a high percentage of people in the discussion agree on an answer that is different from the provided answer, go with the discussion answer, because not all the answers provided with questions are correct. For this question go with answer D (staging area).

Everyone I'm sorry DFS Staging is correct. The files did get into Folder1: The next choke point is the DFS Staging! Again sorry for missing the large file location: State location of the large files: FS1 has a folder named Folder1 that contains large Windows image files.

DFSR uses a hidden staging folder to stage a file before sending or receiving it (ref. Moc 70-741) this folder is 4GB by default path: local replicated folder in the DfsrPrivate\Staging (hidden)
