Actual exam question from Microsoft's DA-100
Question #: 6
Topic #: 5
[All DA-100 Questions]

You create a report by using Microsoft Power BI Desktop.
The report uses data from a Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) cube located on your company's internal network.
You plan to publish the report to the Power BI Service.
What should you implement ta ensure that users who consume the report from the Power BI Service have the most up-to-date data from the cube?

  • A. a subscription
  • B. a scheduled refresh of the dataset
  • C. an OData feed
  • D. an On-premises data gateway
Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: D 🗳️
When you've created dynamic reports in Power BI Desktop, you can share them by publishing to your Power BI site. When you publish a Power BI Desktop file with a live connection to a tabular model to your Power BI site, an on-premises data gateway must be installed and configured by an administrator.

SSAS is a live connection to Power BI. So no need to schedule refresh. D is correct.

it seems even it says it is a live connection, it can still choose between import mode or direct query mode if import mode is chosen, i think it still needs regular extraction? please correct me if this is wrong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX-Pyho1cnE

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/gateway/ Keep your dashboards and reports up to date by connecting to your on-premises data sources without the need to move the data. so seem D is an appropriate option

here is the answer, the correct option is D since it was done on the desktop and you want to publish the report to the Power BI Service https://docs.microsoft.com/es-es/power-bi/connect-data/desktop-analysis-services-tabular-data#frequently-asked-questions

According to this link it's D. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/consumer/end-user-subscribe Opening line says "It's never been easier to stay up-to-date on your most important dashboards and reports. Subscribe to report pages and dashboards". With the article being created in Feb 2021, I would say this is the most up to date document at the time of typing.

The point of this question is "to ensure the user consumes the most up-to-date reports". A gateway can only ensure the user access the data source but cannot ensure the reports are most up-to-date. But subscription can. Please refer to this material. I would go with A. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/consumer/end-user-subscribe

I undersand, but remember that the Microsoft questions always refers to the "most correct answer", not "the only correct" answer... and they do that reffering the question context too, when they said "internal network... SASS...", I know, that is anoying

Easier way would be to schedule a refresh cube data job on SQL server daily. Now everyday the users will have fresh data on their report.

D is correct. We use cube data sources in SSAS at my company and this is how we have refresh set up.

Go with D as that is minimum set up needed. The connection can be Live mode as well. Hence D is correct !
