Box 1: 6 -
Two out of three update domains would be available, each with at least 3 VMs.
An update domain is a group of VMs and underlying physical hardware that can be rebooted at the same time.
As you create VMs within an availability set, the Azure platform automatically distributes your VMs across these update domains. This approach ensures that at least one instance of your application always remains running as the Azure platform undergoes periodic maintenance.
Box 2: the West Europe region and the RG1 resource group

Folks, second answer is correct. To verify, try creating an availability set in resource group A and region B. Then, try creating a VM and, all values empty, choose "availability set" under availability options. You will get the message: "no existing availability sets in current resource group and location."

you are wrong for box2. New VM must be added in the same RG. Box 2 is correct. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/51828.azure-vms-availability-sets-and-availability-zones.aspx

Only one update domain would be updated at the time. See following links: https://azure.codefari.com/2018/12/what-are-availability-set-fault-domain.html https://www.c-sharpcorner.com/article/availability-set-fault-domains-and-update-domains-in-azure-virtual-machie/
