You can actually use more than just the M365 group. I use DL's all the time. The popup message say a Microsoft 365 group, but this is in fact false, and frankly stupid. I have yet to need a M365 Group and all the nonsense that comes with it, for delivering Voicemail. M365, Distribution Lists and Mail-enabled Security groups all work. Only Security groups don't. Essentially, if it's an group with an email address, it works.
