I created a user account just to comment on this. You are completely wrong. You should not use managed solutions unless you're a 3rd party solution provider and sell a solution as an extension. When you manage all environments using managed solution provides no benefit, only problems. 1. It makes atomic deployments much harder. 2. Consider a scenario where you want to update your dev instance with production data (backup / restore). If you were using managed solutions - you are f*cked.

I think there was no need to be that blunt and should have shown some respect. There's no need to use swearing words. That displays your professionalism.

He is just trying to express himself.. Also, he is clearly not offending anyone. He is just being honest and speaking what he truely experienced and feels. As far as I see this, he is a good professional; and I would welcome a person like him in my organization even though he used f-word. Please see, he blurred the f-word.

If I need to import Production solutions on my Dev instance I'm already f*kd. I prefer to not permit users to have the power to destruct the system and you know how users are.

I do know how users are. I have had multiple instances where managed solutions were in prod, but users "lost" their unmanaged version

It's not about importing our Production *solutions*, it's about refreshing your dev sandbox from production. At that point, your dev would have a managed solution rather than unmanaged, which is not what is desired.

The answer is correct but You should always use managed solution as import to production not unmanaged.

@Sha, this is debatable. As a vendor if you are not ISV packaging individual packaged products, you should not use Managed solutions.

Answer is correct;) but your assumption about the production is not true. there is no golden rule for this. It always depends on the project.

What if we had a backup of earlier solution in Prod. Lets say earlier solution A with JS i backed up. and then i imported new solution B with JS updates. When new updated JS file screwed up functionality i will import backed up Solution.

Because importing an unmanaged solution never deletes anything in place in the target system. Just because the undesired customizations are not in the previous version of the unmanaged solution does NOT mean they will be removed if you import it into a system that contains the undesired customizations already. B is definitely incorrect. The only recourse in this scenario is option C--manually remove the undesired customizations.
