Server1 has a root (.) zone. A root zone will disable the use of any forwarders. Therefore, Server1 can only resolve DNS queries for zones that Server1 hosts (zones that Server1 is authoritative for). Therefore, Server1 can resolve hostnames in the contoso.com zone. . DNS Client ----> Server1 (10.0.0.4) forwarder to -----> Server2 (10.0.0.10 can resolve internet names) Due to Server1 has a root zone "." configured, forwarders and root hints will be disabled, and adatum.com is NOT hosted on Server1. Due to Server1 has a root zone "." configured, forwarders and root hints will be disabled, and microsoft.com is NOT hosted on Server1. contoso.com is locally hosted on Server1. .

I've seen the root zone somewhere before, but info on the net is extremely scarce about it for some odd reason. The answers are No, No Yes - purely because the root zone stops root hints and forwarders from working and the Yes is because that zone is local to that DNS server.

Why can't Server1 resolve names hosted on the Internet? It has Server2 for that, doesn't that count? Server1 is configured to use a forwarder named Server2 that has an IP address of 10.0.0.10. Server2 can resolve names hosted on the Internet successfully.
