Chats (personal chat) are stored in the users Outlook (Exchange) with shared files in the users OneDrive. Teams Conversations (Teams chat) are stored in the Groups Outlook (Exchange) with shared files in the Groups SharePoint site. https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/sharepoint/conversations-inside-ms-teams-where-they-are-stored-desktop/m-p/733724 Requirement1: All messages in team collaborations must be deleted after seven years. Key words "messages" (chat), and "team" (team) - stored in Exchange Requirement2: all files used in team collaborations must be retained for five years. Key words "files", and "team" - stored in SharePoint Requirement3: All files used in personal chats must be retained for five years. Key words "files", and "personal" - stored in OneDrive

This is true but if you check the content locations for retention you will see that you have to use Team Channel Messages to retain messages in Teams channels. These is the content location and not Exchange which is the real location of the messages as you correct state.

My answers: Requirement 1 - Teams channel messages (keywords: messages, team collaboration a.k.a channel) Requirement 2 - SharePoint sites (keywords: files, team collaboration a.k.a channel) Requirement 3 - One Drive (keywords: files, personal chats) A bit more more on requirement 1: "Although this data from Teams chats and channel messages are stored in mailboxes, you must configure a retention policy for the Teams channel messages and Teams chats locations. Teams chats and channel messages are not included in retention policies that are configured for Exchange user or group mailboxes. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/retention-policies-teams?view=o365-worldwide

Answer should be SharePoint/OneDrive and Channel messages. Not Exchange. Messages in Teams are being copied to Exchange and kept in Azure blobs storage. Retention location "Teams channel messages" should be used not Exchange

It seems nnhs may be right. "Exchange mailboxes are used to store data copied from these messages. Data from Teams chats is stored in a hidden folder in the mailbox of each user included in the chat, and a similar hidden folder in a group mailbox is used for Teams channel messages. " The documentation continues a few lines below with: "• GroupMailbox: These mailboxes store message data for Teams channels." https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/retention-policies-teams?view=o365-worldwide#how-retention-works-with-microsoft-teams

I believe nnhs was correct in their initial answer to the question. From the same link above:- https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/retention-policies-teams?view=o365-worldwide#how-retention-works-with-microsoft-teams "If you need to delete Teams messages for compliance reasons, retention policies for Teams can delete messages after a specified period, based on when they were created. Messages are then permanently deleted from both the Exchange mailboxes where they stored for compliance operations, and from the primary storage used by the underlying Azure-powered chat service."
