Why Not Teams-Specific Locations (C/E): "Team channel messages" (C) and "Team chats" (E) apply to message text (not files). To retain the actual files, you must target SharePoint (D) and OneDrive (A).

To create a retention policy that retains all files from Microsoft Teams channel conversations and private chats, you should select the following two locations in the retention policy configuration: Teams channel messages: This location includes all messages and files shared within standard and private channels of Microsoft Teams. Teams chats: This location encompasses all messages and files shared in 1:1 or group chats outside of channels. These selections ensure that the retention policy applies to both the files shared in team channels and the files shared in private chats, covering all possible locations where files might be stored within Microsoft Teams.

--- Copilot --- You are correct that documents shared in Microsoft Teams chats and channels are stored in OneDrive and SharePoint. However, when creating a retention policy to retain all the files from Microsoft Teams channel conversations and private chats, you should select C. Team channel messages and E. Team chats in the retention policy. These two locations correspond to the content that you want to retain, which are the files from Microsoft Teams channel conversations and private chats. The retention policy will automatically apply to the underlying storage locations, which are OneDrive and SharePoint, where the files are actually stored. --- Copilot ---

Correct, A & D. The question states about files, not the conversations, so the backend is built upon OneDrive and Sharepoint Online.

Key bit i think is "retain all the files", so I'd say ODfB and SPO. Selecting Teams locations are retention on actual chat messages, not files.

question is about retaining files. Files in private chats are stored in the personal OD and files in channel messages are stored in SPO.

It asks about documents and not messages, so AD. CE would be chat messages and not documents.

Sorry, it's not about private channel messages, but still it's not possible to mark both OneDrive/SharePoint and Teams chats/channel messages, I would go with C/E

This is wrong, it should be Teams private channel messages which is not presented as part of the answer. You only select + those when you are dealing with DLP It's not allowed to select both Teams and OneDrive/SharePoint when creating retention policy!

Correct - ODfB stores files from 1-2-1 and private group chats. SPO stores files from Teams channels.
