Mail-enabled security groups function the same as regular security groups, except that they cannot be dynamically managed through Azure Active Directory and >cannot contain devices< . Assigned seems to be only 4 for me

Some of the answers here are forgetting that you can security enable a 365 group. This means that you can assign it to a compliance policy. Therefore the answers are: Notification: 1,2 and 3 Assigned: 1, 3 and 4 I have a lab tenant in front of me and I can assign the compliance policy to those 365 groups that are security enabled.

I have tested in my tenant as well. You can enable security on 365 groups but this is not turned on by default you have to enable through powershell. Assume defaults unless specified

Notification - 1,3,4 - tested Assignment - 3,4 - tested, I don't even see any M365 groups in the panel, so you might check it again.

KrisDeb is correct. Just tested and you cannot see M365 groups when assigning groups to a Compliance Policy

An object which is not mail enabled, can not receive notification as that doesn't make sense, so the Q1 would be group1, 2 & 3 for sure. As about assignment, it works for security or mail enabled security. It DOES NOT work for assignment via M365 group as seen in most cases, not sure on this case but would bet against the same

I second Neknabs answer, just tested this on my tenant. You cannot assign a compliance policy to a M365 group.
