The reason why https://server02.contoso.com/publish/app1 is correct is that External URL should be as same as External Certificate.

Thank you panda. External URL should be same as maybe back end server URL you mean? not External Certificate?

external url has to have the same path as the backend URL. Path meaning everything after the 'host'. E.g. Host = https://server02.contoso.com Path = /publish/app1 By default, web application proxy translates hosts so you could have https://server02.contoso.com as an external URL and backend as https://serv2apps.contoso.com - as long as the path (/publish/app1) remains the same, web application proxy will be able to translate the host names successfully.
