Exam 70-741 topic 2 question 9 discussion

Actual exam question from Microsoft's 70-741
Question #: 9
Topic #: 2
[All 70-741 Questions]

You have an IP Address Management (IPAM) server named Server1 that runs Windows Server 2016. You have five DHCP servers. Server1 manages all of the
DHCP servers.
On Server1, an administrator uses Purge Event Catalog Data to remove all of the events from the last 30 days.
You need to view all of these lease requests that were denied during the last two days.
What should you do?

  • A. On each DHCP server, run the \Microsoft\Windows\Server Manager\CleanUpOldPerfLogs scheduled task, and then review the event catalog on Server1.
  • B. On Server1, run the Purge Event Catalog Data action and then open Event Viewer on Server1.
  • C. Review the log data in C:\Windows\System32\ipam\Database on Server1.
  • D. On each DHCP server, review the DHCP Server operational event log.

I think this answer its incorrect, will be D.- On each DHCP server, review the DHCP server operational event log". When we do Purge Event Catalog Data, we are deleting data from BBDD (we reduce size). This erased dont delete information on logs in DHCP servers. If we retrieve data in IPAM, the information deleted never back to node IPAM event, only get the newest event. We can configure the database of IPAM with SQL Server or the internal database of Windows. How option C tell us "C:\Windows\System32\ipam\database", I supouse that DDBB is the internal. In the internal DDBB IPAM has two files: IPAM.mdf and IPAM_log.ldf. And while IPAM is running we cant copy or edit IPAM_log.ldf. So, for me the correct answer is D.-On each DHCP server, review the DHCP server operational event log". One thing more: in server with DHCP on path C:\Windows\System32\dhcp we find logs from DHCP, here we can see the release information too. If anyone thinks another thing, please... correct to me.

IPAM is supposed to centralize DHCP and DNS management to one server. The logs exist at C:\Windows\System32\ipam\database on the IPAM server. It's not very efficient to have to view the logs on each individual DHCP server.

i think you are right, if you delete the database as far as I know you have only two possibilities: 1. check logs on DHCP servers or 2. restore the Ipam server (note: IPAM.mdf and IPAM_log.ldf are physical files of SQL Server database)

I think D is correct. After Purge Event Catalog Data: you can view the data on DHCP servers from the last 30 days. >>D is correct answer. you can't view the data on IPAM server from the laset 30 days. >>A,B,C are exculded.

Microsoft: "Purging events from the IPAM database does not clear events from Event Viewer on managed DHCP servers. However, subsequent event catalog data retrieval only adds newly generated events in IPAM. Data that was purged is not re-introduced." This says to me that D is the answer.

I agree with you. B is excluded since even after purging you can review the events from the last 30 days. C is excluded since after purging you can't review the events from last two days. A is excluded since there isn't DHCP event log in Server1.

This is on MS Docs: "Purging events from the IPAM database does not clear events from Event Viewer on managed DHCP servers." This to me states that C is incorrect because the data is no longer in the database location, and you must check each DHCP server manually.

I also agree with D is correct answer because "On Server1, an administrator uses Purge Event Catalog Data to remove all of the events from the last 30 days." therefore nothing left on the Server1 database for the user/administrator to see so C is wrong answer

Explanation/Reference: Event Catalog data stores in the IPAM database, if such a Purge Action is done, events are also removed from the IPAM database, therefore answer C is incorrect. . . .
