Your network contains an Active Directory forest named contoso.com. The forest contains 10 domains.
The root domain contains a global catalog server named DC1.
You remove the global catalog server role from DC1.
You need to decrease the size of the Active Directory database on DC1.

Hi all, I have tested in the lab. Actually if you restart the PC in safe mode (not DSRM) then ntds service is running. so you need to do the following: run ntdsutil, stop ntds service then use the files option. But in the question it only says " run ntdsutil and use the files option" which is only possible if you restart PC in DSRM (not safe mode). The answer B is correct

right , the given answer is correct . The "compact to" command is located under "files" menus of "ntdsutil.exe". https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794920(v=ws.10).aspx

the answer is yes. the service 'AD Domain Services' is off if you boot into safe mode. i tested in lab, and from there you can defrag without issue.

I believe the answer is incomplete. Based on given solution I believe answer is "No". Related questions: Q.108 Stop NTDS, run defrag.exe, restart NTDS service  No Q.109 Stop NTDS, run ntdsutil.exe, use metadata cleanup, restart NTDS service  No Q.110 Restart DC1 in Directory Services Repair Mode, run compact.exe, restart DC1  Yes Q.174 Restart DC1 in Safe Mode, run ntdsutil.exe, use files option, restart DC1  No

Booting the server in Safe Mode is not enough. The server needs to be booted in DSRM (which is basically safe mode where the database isn't mounted).

i think the question very strange , it's because for the windows server 2016 that it can be stop the service and run the ntdsutil for decrease size of the Active Directory database, no need to restart to make it, so i think the answer should be B.

Not a complete solution. Going with NO for this. Anser is correct. https://www.virtualizationhowto.com/2011/12/how-to-compact-active-directory-database/

Defrag does not reduce file size, only organizes it.

I agree with MiMo indication that in safe mode AD DS servecies will be stopped which is same status as offline in the link you have proposed. I agree with Charchar that correct answer is B and the given assumption is imcomplete.

I believe the correct answer is YES, because when we boot the server in safe mode AD DS services will be stopped, and we can use ntdsutil.exe to decrease the size of AD DB https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/canitpro/2015/03/24/step-by-step-active-directory-optimization/

I mean, what the answer says to do isn't wrong but it's incomplete. There's no mention of using "compact" which will achieve what we want. If we just use "files", that won't do anything solve the issue. This is what I hate with these kind of questions. Does it expect me to says that it's correct just because what it does is correct but incomplete, or does it expect me to say no because it's incomplete. I would always lean toward saying no because this way I make no assumptions.

True, but there are so many questions with answers that just suggest a Powershell cmdlet that is incomplete as well. I really hate these incomplete questions and or answers.

A is ok. Compact to <file_path> is under Ntdsutil/Files
