Case States the following: Microsoft Defender for Identity sensors must be installed and must NOT use port mirroring. Port mirroring is used when Sensor is installed NOT in Domain Controller. So because we can install Sensor in Domain Controller only the answer is pretty clear.

Starting June 15 2022, Microsoft no longer supports the Defender for Identity sensor on devices running Windows Server 2008 R2. We recommend that you identify any remaining Domain Controllers (DCs) or (AD FS) servers that are still running Windows Server 2008 R2 as an operating system and make plans to update them to a supported operating system.

If the domain controller doesn't have the resources required by the Defender for Identity sensor, domain controller performance isn't affected. However, the Defender for Identity sensor might not operate as expected.
