"The solution must minimize development time", so: 1. format the data as a table 2. Import as a dataset (upload involves scheduling updates, whereas with import it updates automatically) 3. add a tile for the dataset to dashbard

This is incorrect, there is no option for XLSX files to create a tile in pbi service! 1- From Excel, Formet the data in Excel1 as a table 2- From powerbi.com, upload Excel1 3- From powerbi.com, pin a range from Excel1 to DashboardA https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/service-dashboard-pin-tile-from-excel

I agree good answer and good link. But can you guys explain me why we need to convert the data in Excel as a table? Once we loaded the file, when we pin from Excel to a dashboard we don't select already the range and in this case we select the data range rather than the table?

I don't even see import as an option. I see in power bi service, in the workspace, the option to upload an xlsx file. NOTE: The file must be in Sharepoint or OneDrive, although the option to upload from your PC is there, this no longer works!! Wow. Details.

How can you add a tile for a dataset to dashboard? I'm not saying that you cannot do it for sure, but I have no idea how I can do it at the moment

You can create tiles from a report, dataset, dashboard, the Q&A question box, Excel, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and more. Please read the documentation: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/consumer/end-user-tiles

I tried it and pinning the data works. The problem ist the Q&A part that is specifically mentioned in the question. I didn't manage to activate Q&A by treating the file as a simple excel. Only by uploading it as a dataset, Q&A was possible!

that video does NOT show formatting as a table (which you cannot do in powerbi service, it just shows pinning a range)

You didn't watch the video then. What do you think was selecting the table and what he was saying while doing that? I under english is not everyones language but common.

I would agree with proposed solution. First we need to upload the excel file to PBI service. I think Q&A cannot be enabled with DirectQuery so data must be imported into the datamodel so we are importing this uploaded data as dataset (no need to create a report to get tiles into a dashboard) Finally add a tie from the excel data to Dashboard. Cannot think in a reason to require data to be formatted as a table

I do not see any documentation for pinning dataset to dashboard, so I think we would need to upload the Excel so that pinning to dashboard can be done from the Excel..

If you have a look at the free, 50-question paper on Microsoft's website and also their 4-part prep video series for PL-300 located in the "readiness zone", they allude to the Ctrl+T shortcut to convert to table, in order to avoid an error when ingesting an Excel file. Also, if you read the difference between Upload and Import here: (https://biuniversity.wordpress.com/2017/03/08/powerbi-upload-excel-import-excel-differences/), it becomes clear, upload is the correct choice. 1. there are two ways this can be done Method 1. Dataset: It imports excel/CSV file as a dataset, which allows to create a report, then you can create a tile and pin to the dashboard. Solution is 2, 3, 4 (Most of people voted) Method 2. Upload as an Excel file. It brings just excel file to the workspace, But you CANNOT create any tiles, only you can format or define the range and pin to the dashboard. Solution is 2, 6, 1

the question is not correct. I tried creating an simple excel and uploading it to powerbi service. It automatically creates a dataset, but then I couldn't find an option to pin anything durectly to dashboard. You first have to create a table saved in a report and then it can be pinned to a dashboard. pinning anything from a dataset with first creating a report looks not possible. If anyone can explain how it could be done, I would be happy to hear.

But I can say for sure that before uploading an excel file, data should be formatted as a table, otherwise PBI doesn't allow to upload it.

it's a tricky question: because you cannot add a tile for a dataset. 1- format 2- upload 3- pin a range to dasboard. but you not be able to use A&A and that the trick. it's just say has Q&A enabled not can you used it

Bad question as you can never get the Q&A enabled. The provided answer is kind ok 1- Upload Excel File 2- Import file 3- Pin If you import as dataset then you cannot pin the visual directly
