Got it: Requirements for SMTP AUTH client submission 1. Mailbox: You must have a licensed Microsoft 365 or Office 365 mailbox to send email from. 2. Port: Port 587 (recommended) or port 25 is required and must be unblocked on your network. Some network firewalls or ISPs block ports, especially port 25, because that's the port that email servers use to send mail. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/mail-flow-best-practices/how-to-set-up-a-multifunction-device-or-application-to-send-email-using-microsoft-365-or-office-365#option-2-send-mail-directly-from-your-printer-or-application-to-microsoft-365-or-office-365-direct-send

I believe A and B are the best choices. Port 587 everyone on agrees. The reason for B is SMTP AUTH requires authentication from a user in Exchange Online, thus a you need a licensed 365 user to be able to do this. So this is more inline with option one in the link you provided.

A. Configure the network firewall to allow traffic on port 443. C. Configure the network firewall to allow traffic on port 587. Explanation: To allow SMTP AUTH to work through an SMTP relay device, you need to configure the firewall to allow traffic on port 587, which is the default port used for SMTP submission with authentication. Additionally, port 443 may need to be opened if the SMTP relay device requires a secure SSL/TLS connection for SMTP authentication. Option B is incorrect because instructing users to specify a different email address would not resolve the issue with the SMTP relay device. Option D is incorrect because configuring a licensed Microsoft 365 mailbox on the relay device is not required for SMTP AUTH to work.
