Serverless is a compute tier for single databases in Azure SQL Database that automatically scales compute based on workload demand and bills for the amount of compute used per second. The serverless compute tier also automatically pauses databases during inactive periods when only storage is billed and automatically resumes databases when activity returns.

Azure SQL Database offers a serverless compute tier, which allows you to scale compute resources dynamically based on the workload demands. With the serverless configuration, you don't need to provision and manage a fixed amount of compute resources for your database. Instead, the compute resources are automatically scaled up or down based on the workload. This allows you to pay for the actual compute resources used on a per-second basis.
