That's true! this the same logic for on-premise network. A host connected to private network needs to use NAT to transform its private address into public address routable on the internet. this job is done by on-premises routers. but in this scenario, it's run by NAT Gateway.
NAT is for Internet access. "You need to provide Internet access to" something in the private subnet, meaning that devices in the private subnet should be able to access the Internet. That's what NAT gateway is for.
Internet gateway cannot be used in a Private Subnet at all.
