Actual exam question from PMI's PgMP
Question #: 438
Topic #: 1
[All PgMP Questions]

A program manager is responsible for constructing a US$50 million building. Management suggests it will take three years to complete. The program manager can select a design-build option to optimize the construction schedule to 1.5 years. However, heavy demand for steel is causing price increases and delivery delays. If this trend continues, it could take as long as 4.5 years to complete construction. You learn that a new technology can yield a definitive delivery schedule of 1.25 years.
What is the expected time of delivery?

  • A. 1.25 years
  • B. 1.50 years
  • C. 1.75 years
  • D. 1.00 years

Selected Answer: A
In this scenario, the expected time of delivery, considering the introduction of a new technology that can yield a definitive delivery schedule, would be: A. **1.25 years** The new technology offers a definitive delivery schedule of 1.25 years, which is the shortest among the provided options and is not affected by the steel demand issues that extend the timeline in other scenarios.

Sorry # PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) estimation formula: # Expected Time (TE) = (Optimistic Time + 4(Most Likely Time) + Pessimistic Time) / 6 # Given values for Optimistic (O), Most Likely (M), and Pessimistic (P) Time O = 1.25 # Optimistic Time (with new technology) M = 1.5 # Most Likely Time (with design-build option) P = 4.5 # Pessimistic Time (with steel delivery delays) # Calculate Expected Time (TE) using PERT formula TE = (O + 4*M + P) / 6 TE=1.9583333333333333 So C. 1.75 years is the nearest answer

Since the new technology can bring the completion time certainly (confirmed) to 1.25. So select 1.25 and no need to calculate PERT because the 1.25 is a certain
