A project manager wants to assign a junior engineer to a new project. However, the engineer declines the project manager's invitation to join the new project.
What is the most likely reason for the engineer's refusal to work on the project?

  • A. The project manager did not follow the normal hiring process with the engineer's functional manager
  • B. The engineer has "project burnout" from working long hours and solving difficult problems

Selected Answer: B
The specific language used in the scenario, "declines the project manager's invitation to join the new project," suggests that the junior engineer is declining the opportunity to work on the new project that the project manager is offering. This language implies that the junior engineer has made a decision not to take on additional work, which may indicate that the engineer is experiencing "project burnout." Also, the scenario states that the engineer "takes on complex tasks and solve problems in innovative ways" which can indicate that the is suffering from "project burnout from working long hours and solving difficult problems". I do not believe that A is the correct answer as they have worked together before which would suggest that the project engineer knows the proper hiring route. I do not believe that D is the correct answer as well as the scenario does not indicate anything to support that.

Your summary caps it all, but the conclusion should reflect motivation. The junior engineer felt he needed to be appreciated more and was unwilling to accept the PM's invitation. The answer should be D.

"The junior engineer felt he needed to be appreciated more and was unwilling to accept the PM's invitation." There is nothing in the question that would suggest that. As Dinesh1987 mentioned scenario states that the engineer "takes on complex tasks and solve problems in innovative ways" which can indicate that the is suffering from "project burnout from working long hours and solving difficult problems".

Selected Answer: D
The engineer has been working the past without any encouragement. Now the Project Manager wants to "assign" the engineer also without any discussion, recognition or motivation, hence "using" the engineer to his project's benefits. The engineer would decline even before meeting his functional manager, or even for any new projects as he never received any encouragement in his past works.

D. READ THE QUESTION He wanted to take on the projects previously, because he enjoys solving problems and tasks in innovative ways. "Encouragement" is the key word here. The question says nothing about the schedule and long hours. Some projects aren't every day or all day. Although he didn't need encouragement, he didn't receive recognition/appraise for his growth during these projects. This is what LEADS to burnout. The feeling of being undervalued for your initiative. I spent 13 years as a senior leader in the Military before construction, and in both situations the answer is the same, the lack of recognition is what causes burnout and the change of motivation towards new projects. When you praise, recognize, and motivate you reap the reward. D is 100% correct.

B. Based on the question, we can easily assume that the engineer has project burnout due to lack of encouragement.

Answer CANNOT be B, because nowhere in the question it says that engineer had to work long hours. You cannot make assumptions. D) IS the correct answer. Part of the servant leadership is to support and encourage and reward team members

Selected Answer: D
D - the engineer wasnt motivated inspite of his innovative way of working on complex problems, it cant be B as no where the question mentions he was burn out or worked long hours beyond normal etc, the question only tells us he worked on complex tasks and innovatively doesnt mean burnout or long hours, infact innovation leads to making teh task simple

I think D as its mentioned in question done without encouraging. which might lead to disappointment although it is not reflected by engineer but that can be the reason
