In order to utilize a custom summary field, the administrator needs to add data grouping to the report. When the ability to create a summary field is grayed out, it means that the report is not currently being grouped by any field. In order to use a custom summary field, the report needs to be grouped by a field. Adding data grouping to the report will enable the administrator to group the report by the field that the custom summary field is based on, and then the ability to create a summary field should become available.
