D is essential for both tracking and immediate notifications. B can provide notifications, also Automatically detects a change to notify unlike D. A provides tracking only. - A is more like analysis of the data for reporting, captures snapshot not realtime like D

According to know what is gona happen with a field (just a notification), the best practice is feed tracking, but if you what to track values of a field in a useful maner, please use Historical Trending. You will be able to draw a chart based on the field evolution. Chatter feed will never show you evolution like Hist-Trend which is a report toolbox.
