CRX stands for “Container Runtime for ESXi”. In a nutshell, it's a virtual machine that is highly optimized to run a Linux kernel that itself is highly optimized to run containers. As mentioned above, the three components, the customized VMX, the Linux kernel and the Container Engine, are considered a “CRX"
