Answer is correct, 5.5 has a maximum cluster size of 32 hosts, so the cluster config has to happen post upgrade.

Agreed with provided answer (although I don't agree with the 48-host cluster,. First step is always to take a backup of the current configuration. Then upgrade path is: PSC -> vCenter -> ESXi -> VM Tools and Appliances. Hosts in a cluster should be homogeneous, so they should be added to a single cluster only when they're all at the same version. steps 4 and 5 are interchangeable - it does not matter which comes first.

agreed with answer. but if it was in actual upgrade i would - join all hosts to 1 cluster before upgrading. that way i can put more hosts in MM.

If you change the inventory setup after taking a backup of the vcenter, then the back up step seems redundant. So that’s why best plan would be to change the inventory (cluster change) at the end once all upgrades are successful. My 2 cents
