Devices configured with HSRP exchange three types of multicast messages: Coup—When a standby device wants to assume the function of the active device, it sends a coup message. Hello—The hello message conveys to other HSRP device the HSRP priority and state information of the device. Resign—A device that is the active device sends this message when it is about to shut down or when a device that has a higher priority sends a hello or coup message.
