Shredding is more secure than deguassing since the actual drives are physically destroyed.

The actual term for shredding hard drive is pulverizing not shredding. If they meant shredding, Comptia should have included the term pulverizing in the option rather than using degaussing and shredding

That is incorrect at least according to the newest Comptia book. Shredding and pulping—most media can be shredded. For paper documents, shredders are rated by the size of the remnants they reduce a sheet to. Level 1 is 12mm strips, while Level 6 is 0.8x4mm particles. Pulping the shredded remains with water or incinerating them provides an extra measure of protection. Some office shredders can destroy optical media too. Industrial shredders can destroy hard drives and flash drives. Pulverizing—hitting a hard drive with a hammer can leave a surprising amount of recoverable data, so this type of destruction should be performed with industrial machinery.

Degaussing : Pros: A degausser is good if you want to completely erase all audio, video and data signals from the magnetic storage. Cons: Degaussing is not entirely fool-proof. It can only be used on magnetic media, and there is no way to guarantee that a particular degaussing machine is strong enough to destroy all the data on every hard drive. Also, degaussing does not provide reporting of the erasure process, which is needed to prove regulatory compliance. Most IT professionals will tell you that degaussing or wiping hard drives is no longer an acceptable method for complete, secure destruction of stored data. ___ Benefits of Hard Drive Shredding: Your sensitive data is now 100% unrecoverable, so you don’t have to worry at all about hackers seizing your data. You can ensure your business is in compliance with regulatory requirements, avoiding fines and potential lawsuits. For personal computers, your data will be safely destroyed without the worry of identity theft ___ We can use degaussing, hard drives are HDD, not SSD, but shredding is better Comparison: https://legalshred.com/degaussing-vs-hard-drive-shredding/

Confidential or secret documents should be marked as such. Such documents may be treated to special disposal methods, such as finer cross-shredding or even incineration. There are several types of shredders. They can be classified to a certain security level, based on the size of the remnants they reduce a sheet to. Level 1 is 12mm strips, while Level 6 is 0.8x4mm particles. If shredding is not considered secure enough, the shredded material can be further subjected to a process of pulping (mixing with water then pulverizing) or burning.

I guess if you can shred HHD- Next best answer after looking at Darril Gibson book would be degaussing - "A degausser is very powerful electronic magnet. Passing disk through field renders the data on tape and magnetic disk drives unreadable'

I will go with A. I havent seen any information related to Shredding. Here is the explanation: "According to many in the information security field, including the US National Security Agency (NSA), shredding of HDDs is not the best method of destroying information contained in the drive. Degaussing is by far the most common method of sanitizing Top Secret data." Other resource: Answer: A Explanation: Hard drive degaussing is a highly advanced technology used to sanitize hard drives before disposal or reuse. Degaussers come in various types and sizes, with varying effectiveness as well. A professional data destruction service selects the most appropriate degausser for the job based on prevailing circumstances. Degaussing is fast and effective, and it ensures that you're compliant with data regulations.

It appears that according to Comptia GCGA book that shredding is never referenced to hard drives it is only referenced for paper. So when taking this specific test, pulverizing is physically destroying drives and shredding is shredding paper. So that answer is A actually from what i can tell...

Degaussing--> Degaussing is not entirely fool-proof. It can only be used on magnetic media, and there is no way to guarantee that a particular degaussing machine is strong enough to destroy all the data on every hard drive. Shredding--> The best and most secure method of rendering hard drive information completely unusable is to completely destroy it through hard drive shredding, your sensitive data is now 100% unrecoverable. So, D. is the correct answer. Reference: https://legalshred.com/degaussing-vs-hard-drive-shredding/

If the term hard drive shredding is popular in the industry, I'm wondering why comptia does not differentiate between pulverizing and hard drive shredding. They should have stick to one term or merge both as pulverizing/hard drive shredding

A is the correct answer. You cannot reuse a hard drive once it has been degaussed. This is because the degaussing process removes all the data and start up files. As such, a degaussed hard drive will not boot up.

Shredding is correct. If they were asking for most TIME EFFECIENT, it would be degaussing.
