The users purpose is clear "browsing the internet" it is not to connect a resource or company web application remotely which may require stabliching a secure connection which means VPN. We can cot take VPN as a correct answer due to the purpose she uses her home computer, which is used to connect a particular source to a known destination. Her privacy can be protected by firewall and her security by antivirus, that is the education she needs.

What if by "privacy" she means "no viruses/hackers stealing my CC number. or, worse, my nude pictures"? And then answers are: firewall and antivirus.

Firewall and antivirus is the main way of securing a computer, how does a vpn help a customer that isn't working for a company?

I think : VPN is for " the privacy of her home computer" Firewall is for "the security of her home network while browsing the Internet. It should be Antivirus if it is the security of the computer, not the network

From How-To-Geek: "A VPN acts as a secure tunnel through which your internet traffic is funneled. Traffic is encrypted on both ends so that, in theory, only you and the endpoint (the website that you’re accessing) know what’s being transmitted." So I agree VPN for privacy and Firewall for security. I would rather filter out bad things coming in to begin with than have the antivirus there to catch them when they're already in is how I'm going to look at it.

Just like Brianman said, the question indicates "privacy" and "security". Therefore VPN is the most correct answer for privacy and firewall is the best answer for security. If it was concentrating on browsing the internet it might include an answer involving a proxy but it states nothing additional relating to browsing. So it is OVERALL security; which is firewall.

The key words in the question are 'privacy' and 'security' and 'educating'. The details in the questions really tell you the answer. Both the VPN (privacy) and the firewall (security) make sense.

VPN-s can be used for privacy reasons as the traffic is encrypted and run through tunnels. So that's a yes. And, the firewall is a good choice too, but very close to Antivirus. Security wise, often times antiviruses are better as they include some form of a firewall too. Although in Comptia's case, I can't say for sure. I'll stick with firewall and vpn

I can agree that VPN discussion is correct to address privacy and security concerns however the question clearly states address her security concerns which should be Firewall and Antivirus as they are fundamental while VPN discussion is a lot more advanced. I think that, for a home user asking basic security and privacy questions, a tech should start with the basics i.e. Firewall and Antivirus. If the user is more advanced or wants to know more then the tech can introduce VPN/Anonymizers.

VPN would be correct to discuss at some point as most commercial VPN services are a combination VPN/Anonymizer. They encrypt the active devices traffic and tunnel it to a server (client-server VPN). The server then decrypts the traffic and performs the Web searches (anonymizer/proxy) then sends the results back through the tunnel to the client. This vastly increases device privacy and security.

Makes no sense why it's VPN and not Antivirus. I would use firewall and Antivirus always as first choice.

Agree with Firewall! But why not Antivirus? Not sure with VPN, because there is no hint in the question that she will use the PC as also her network for work purpose… so for what to use a VPN? Any thoughts, comments?
