Read all question, 'Use the Windows recovery and repair utilities to remediate the issue'. Step 1: Choose Boot from Windows 7 DVD Step 2: Click Repair Step 3: Select Command Prompt Step 4: Enter “bootrec /fixboot” ENGNET81 is right. And upgrade option is possible only when old system is working

An in-place upgrade repair install is a "last gasp" method of restoring a Windows 7 installation that will not boot. This is from the official CompTIA guide.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHMJgvGf0Fc looks like bootrec /fixboot or bootrec /rebuildbcd would work depending on situation

The bootrec command is a Windows Recovery Environment troubleshooting and repair tool that repairs the master boot record, boot sector, or BCD store. It replaced the old fixboot and fixmbr Recovery Console commands (a Windows XP tool) and adds two more repair features: •   bootrec /fixboot   Rebuilds the boot sector for the active system partition •   bootrec /fixmbr   Rebuilds the master boot record for the system partition •   bootrec /scanos   Looks for Windows installations not currently in the BCD store and shows you the results without doing anything •   bootrec /rebuildmbr   Looks for Windows installations not currently in the BCD store and gives you the choice to add them to the BCD store. - Mike Meyers ebook

This is incorrect, the commands do different, although related, things: /FIXMBR The /FIXMBR switch writes an MBR to the system partition. /FIXBOOT The /FIXBOOT switch writes a new boot sector onto the system partition. So /fixmbr is only going to work if you have and MBR partition structure on your hard drive, which we don't know. Also the simulation is on a windows 7 machine so i'm unsure why you think /fixboot wouldn't work? Are you saying you gave this answer on the exam and got it wrong?

Upgrade or bootrec /fixmbr will both have the same result (upgrade is just a GUI running automated commands like bootrec in the background). My advice is remember both options and see what the PBQ allows during the exam. If you cannot follow the repair link to cmd then the only option left is upgrade.

That is what I did. By clicking on the Repair your Computer button you'll have access to the rest of the features, including going to the Command Prompt. In there, you can type in bootrec /fixmbr. I believe fixmbr relates to fixing the Boot Manager's code while fixboot is about creating a new partition boot sector to a certain partition, so for this particular PBQ it's be fixmbr.
