A client wants a technician to create a PC naming convention that will make the client's PCs easier to track and identify while in use. Which of the following naming convention formats should the technician follow?
B is a better answer. You can get mac addresses from a network scan or the switch. If your company is spread out you need location in the naming convention.
It would contain a lot of redundant information wouldn't it though like domain name. Plus it asks for the, "easiest". If you can directly see the MAC address of the device you already know exactly what device given the vendor and you'll probably start to remember just by that. Plus if you're running a DHCP then that would pretty much be another confusion. I'm not even gonna start with the location part...like, that ain't easy - I'm guessing you'd have to install some API programming stuff on the device :/?...Who wants to pay for that. He's a tech not a programmer.
I'm agreeing here that B is the correct answer.
I also selct this my exam.
If this question belongs to Domain 4.1 (What I expect) I had no failure in this. So it seems right!
=> Domain name, location, Asset ID
The people saying C are clowns. What sounds Easier? Caf-8C1B2A3B4B1B or Cali-Bld1-Cafe ???? The question literally asks which one would be easier to locate via its name. You out here remembering a damn MAC address? The answer is B.
The correct answer to this question, at least according to comptia, is C. While B would be easier to remember, you can identify the physical device through the MAC address. Whether or not B would be the best answer isn't relevant while taking the test since comptia thinks it's C here.
Based on other tests I had on different platforms, I can say the answer is "C".
Using the mac address of the asset as identifier makes it easy on a logistic level as doesn't need to be continuously renamed if moved or reassigned.
Although it seems like knowing the location and the ip address in the name of the computer would be the perfect way to "track" the pc. In practice, this information can change depending on the pc's location and hence, would be difficult to discern if it is indeed the pc you are tracking or something else you are looking at. Generally your MAC address and Asset ID DO NOT change depending on where you are and so looking for this information will allow you to trach the PC no matter which IP or location it is in. Like a social security number/credit card.
For all the amateurs that have answers other than the indicated C, you are newbs and have obviously never worked in a corporate environment if you think RFID tags and locations (desk?) are used to track computers "in use" you are a joker.
I agree that C is most correct in the frame of the question. Asset ID allows tracking of which employee has possession of which device and MAC Address is the only option for uniquely identifying a device on the network and in person.
Domain name is useless for this as it will not track or identify anything so not A or B.
RFID would allow a form identification but requires additional hardware and work. Tags can also get damaged or lost AND cannot be natively tracked on the network (like locating an assigned address or what network segment the device is currently in), so not D.
If given enough space asset ID and MAC address would be very specific and as long as you had less than 999 assets it would fit, if you did not use colons in the MAC address. If you had more than 999 I guess you could just use the last 3 and the MAC address which would ALL be different. I am going with this on being correct and hope I do not have this question on my test.
