Actual exam question from Microsoft's 70-740
Question #: 191
Topic #: 1
[All 70-740 Questions]

HOTSPOT -
Your network contains an Active Directory domain named contoso.com. The domain contains three clusters named FC1, FC2, and FC3.
The domain contains servers that run Windows Server 2016. The servers are configured as shown in the following table.

Server1 hosts a highly available virtual machine named VM1.
You are creating a maintenance plan for the servers, and you are evaluating how to move VM1 to the different clusters.
You need to identify the fastest method to move VM1 to FC2 and FC3.
Which method should you identify for each cluster? To answer, select the appropriate options in the answer area.
NOTE: Each correct selection is worth one point.

This is incorrect. answer should be: live migration export and import "quick migration" only exist before server 2008

I think correct answers are: VM1 to FC2: Live migration VM1 to FC3: Export and Import We have to remember what the context of these terms are. Live migration and quick migration are possible for intra-cluster moves. Live (shared nothing) migration/Live migration from Hyper-V allow for moves inter-host (eventual addition to a new target cluster). http://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/hyper-v-live-migration-methods/ There is no Quick migration option in Hyper-V, only in Failover Cluster Manager (for moves to another node within the same cluster). If we have to move from one node to another node we will have to drop the VM out of the source cluster and then move it to the target host, finally adding it into the new target cluster.

Now if we were told that we were able to enable processor compatability with the Live Migration option for the VM1 to FC3 move from Hyper-V manager, then I think that would be a valid option. However we aren't given this level of detail or additional info in the question. All we know is that the hosts of FC1 and FC3 have differnet CPUs. If we were to attempt a Live Migration from Hyper-V manager of VM1 from a host in FC1 to a host in FC3, then it would fail because of the diferent CPUs. Unless we were able to enable processor compatability a Live Migration is not a valid option. Therefore only Export and import is left as the valid choice. The only other possability that could be, would be doing a shared nothing migration. But that gets more involved with setting up constrained delegation and haivng to move the VM to clustered storage. We are not told anything about the existance of a target clustered storage on FC3 here that would be required. https://www.itprotoday.com/server-virtualization/shared-nothing-live-migration-between-clusters

I think Live Migration for the first one. I don't know if you can assume they are using SCVMM. But even if you are not using SCVMM you can still remove node from cluster, live migrate with Hyper-V Manager, then join node to cluster again. The second one is export/import because of different CPU versions. Quick migration does not work cross cluster.

Hi all, The correct answer is Live Migration and Export Import. Here is the proof: Quick Migration requires the source and target hosts to be in the same failover cluster and there is no Quick Migration option in Hyper-V manager. http://ramprasadtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Quick-Migration-Deep-dive.pdf

Thank you Sir, you gave the best hint. its not in the same cluster so quick will not be possible.

Migration from FO Manager is only for nodes within the cluster, not possible between clusters. Remove VM and use HV Manager to Live Migrate to HV host in another cluster. If different processor, cannot Live Migrate. So use Export/Import.

If the clusters can accept the VMs, then a quick migration is correct. A quick migration requires the machine to be in an off state on the source, and it will start in an off state on the new cluster. Once the machine on the new cluster is started, it will accept the different processor.

from the microsoft website on export / import doc : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/deploy/export-and-import-virtual-machines Import a Virtual Machine Importing a virtual machine registers the virtual machine with the Hyper-V host. You can import back into the host, or new host. If you're importing to the same host, you don't need to export the virtual machine first, because Hyper-V tries to recreate the virtual machine from available files. Importing a virtual machine registers it so it can be used on the Hyper-V host. The Import Virtual Machine wizard also helps you fix incompatibilities that can exist when moving from one host to another. This is commonly differences in physical hardware, such as memory, virtual switches, and virtual processors. so different processor should be export / import

Here is an article: Live Migration replaced Quick Migration in Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V R2 and has been part of every subsequent release. (see article link) https://searchservervirtualization.techtarget.com/definition/Microsoft-Hyper-V-Quick-Migration It looks like quick migration was replaced by live migration in 2008. vm1 to fc2 = live migration vm1 to fc3 Export and import based on different processor

For live migration the proccessor needs to be the same on all hosts. See URL https://www.petri.com/move-virtual-machine-between-hyper-v-hosts => For Live Migration to work, all cluster nodes must have processors from the same processor vendor, for example Intel or AMD. So Live migration is not possible between FC1 and FC3.
