Actual exam question from Microsoft's 70-740
Question #: 240
Topic #: 1
[All 70-740 Questions]

You have a Network Load Balancing (NLB) cluster that contains two nodes named Server1 and Server2. The nodes run Windows Server 2016.
The NLB cluster has the following configuration.

You deploy the Web Server (IIS) server role identically to both servers.
You need to configure NLB to load balance requests between the web servers. HTTP requests must be stateless. HTTPS requests must be stateful.
What should you do? Each correct answer presents part of the solution.

  • A. Modify the Cluster operation mode.
  • B. Suspend the cluster.
  • C. Drainstop the cluster.
  • D. Add a new port rule.
  • E. Edit the existing port rule.

I think this page reference explains why C and D are correct, especially why E is not correct; why we don't just edit the existing rule.: See paragraph after "FIGURE 1-7 The fifth page of the New Cluster Wizard" "For the 70-412 exam, assume that in any NLB scenario you see, the predefined port rule will be removed and all port rules will be custom-configured. So, to prepare for the exam, you need to understand all of the customizable configuration options on the Add/Edit Port Rule dialog box, shown in Figure 1-8. You also need to understand the two additional options that appear in this dialog box when you later edit an existing port rule within a particular host’s properties (not the cluster’s properties) in Network Load Balancing Manager." https://www.techveze.com/configuring-port-rules/

I think it is D and E. I have labbed it and can't see another way to do it. The question is about changing the port rules for 80 and 443. The default port rule covers all ports, so it must be edited to 80 or 443. You then need to create a second port rule for the other port. Drainstop may be a later step, but this question is about the port rules.

I was torn between C + D and D + E. But I have just read that port rules cannot overlap. This means that the generic ALL ports rule needs to be edited. It can't be kept. Then you can add a second rule for the other port.

I think the given answer C/D are correct. Especially port rule D is correct. E is not correct. If you edit the existing port rule, for detail affinity from Single to None, the settings for existing port rule, such as Single affinity should be lost.

"Each correct answer presents part of the solution" So adding or editing is only part of the solution, and the other part is to stop the nlb hosts, because anyway, when we apply the new port rule configurations the nlb cluster will be restarted automatically. The recommended way to stop an nlb host is the "Drainstop" option.

Current NLB config: Port rule: all ports Filtering Mode: Multiple hosts Affinity: Single (maintains state) In effect, cluster is already load balancing. Can add port rule specifically for HTTP/S (80,443) So CD is correct.

problem is that your existing rule already cover port 80 & port 443, so you'll need to edit the existing rule to exclude 80 and create a new rule for the stateless 80

my understanding of the answer: First lets look at what Statefull /less means: - Stateless Interactions- There is no impact/connection loss if the request is processed by different servers. < HTTP - Stateful Interactions- There will be impact/connection loss if the request is processed by a different server after a session break and if the client session data is not shared between the servers. < HTTPS Filter Mode: Single Single With this option NLB maps the clients to a specific host in the cluster based on the client’s Full IP Address. Once connection is established, the requests coming from the same client IP address always reach the same member server in the cluster. Useful for Intranet Applications. By looking at the current rule: we are using all ports 0-65535.. hence the "Add a new port rule" now we are never told to keep the connection active while doing so.. so "drainstop the cluster" & "Suspend" are out for me. i would then select "Modify the cluster opertation mode" because of the Unicast mode. what you think?

Well you can't add a new Port Rule without first editing the existing one, because the one displayed uses all possible port numbers.
