If the server uses UEFI to boot, you need to change the script from NanoServer.vhd to NanoServer.vhdx. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/vmm/hyper-v-nano?view=sc-vmm-2016 A VHDX file created with a generation 2 virtual machine can be attached to the IDE controller or the SCSI controller of a generation 1 virtual machine. However, if this is a bootable VHDX file, the generation 1 virtual machine won't boot. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/plan/should-i-create-a-generation-1-or-2-virtual-machine-in-hyper-v#work-with-vhdx-files

DaveC is correct ... when using new-nanoserverimage the extension .vhd vs vhdx decides the VM Generation the image is created for. But provide explantion is wrong ... under normal circumnstance a Gen1 VM can boot from a vhdx file ...

This is correct but I believe the reason is wrong. From the grey box, top of page 48 of the Exam Ref book " As mentioned earlier, the file extension you supply in the TargetPath parameter specifies whether the New-NanoServerImage cmdlet creates a Generation 1 or Generation 2 image. When creating the new virtual machine in Hyper-V, be sure to specify a Generation 1 VM for a VHD file or a Generation 2 VM for a VHDX file."
