You have a Hyper-V host named Server1 that hosts a virtual machine named VM1. Server1 and VM1 run Windows Server 2016.
The settings for VM1 are configured as shown in the exhibit. (Click the Exhibit button.)

You need to ensure that you can use the Copy-VMFile cmdlet on Server1 to copy files from VM1.
Solution: You enable the Guest services integration service for VM1.
Does this meet the goal?

  • A. Yes
  • B. No
Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: A 🗳️
The guest service allows the Hyper-V administrator to copy files to a running virtual machine without using a network connection. Beforehand the only way to copy files to the virtual machine was for both the virtual machine and the host be connected to same network and then either use file services to copy file or to create a remote desktop session to the virtual machine and copy files via RDS session.
To copy a file to a virtual machine you need to use the Copy-VMFile PowerShell cmdlet.

Answer is B: No. There are a few ways to copy FROM a vm. Copy-VMFile is NOT one of them. It is by design a one-way street. Possible actual ways of achieving the question's objective are: - Enhanced Session Mode: which allows mapping local resources (Like a drive) when connecting to VMs. The setting is on the properties of the Hyper-V host itself. Reference: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/learn-more/use-local-resources-on-hyper-v-virtual-machine-with-vmconnect -Enter-PSSession: possible but a pain the ass Reference: https://charbelnemnom.com/how-to-copy-files-between-the-guest-and-the-host-in-hyperv-with-powershell-direct/ - A network share: pretty self-explanatory. For this one you would need to add a network adapter to the VM in the exhibit. Reference (also for the other ones): https://4sysops.com/archives/copy-files-between-hyper-v-and-a-guest-vm/

Wrong, Copy-VMFile is only for copying TO a VM. You do need guest services enabled for this to happen. But this questions refers to copying FROM a VM. Hence the answer is No.

Your precondition is Wrong. Based on following link, VM-CopyFile can copy files from VM. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/hyper-v-on-windows/reference/integration-services "Hyper-V Guest Service Interface" It says... Provides an interface for the Hyper-V host to bidirectionally copy files to or from the virtual machine.

I agree, that link suggests otherwise. But the actual Copy-VMFile command is only for copying TO a VM. See here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/hyper-v/copy-vmfile?view=win10-ps - they refer to using that specific command in the question.

I get confused because it asks to ensure copying from the vm to the host. Can this happen?

Guest service must be checked before you can copy to and from VM

I mean if we can copy from a VM to the host or only from host to the VM.
