Incorrect. ehommes is right. Dedup only looks at files larger than 32kb. File1.txt would be available to both servers. Deduplication skips over the following files: System-state files Encrypted files Files with extended attributes Files whose size is less than 32 KB Reparse points (that are not data deduplication reparse points) https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/desktop/dedup/about-data-deduplication

On server 2; File1.txt only (This file is less than 32KB so it was not treated by dedup. As result it can be read. The other files cannot be ready because they have been treated by dedup and server 2 hasn't dedup installed. On server 3: File1.txt only because dedup 2016 isn't backwards compatible with dedup on server 2012

This means File1.txt 20KB is NOT treated by Deduplication. Thus, File1.txt can be read in Server2 and Server3.

Deduplication isn't retroactive. So, the data with us used deduplication on WS 2016 can't be access on WS 2012.
