You are a server administrator at a company named Contoso, Ltd.
Contoso has a Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V environment configured as shown in the following table.

All of the virtual switches are of the external type.
You need to ensure that you can move virtual machines between the hosts without causing the virtual machines to disconnect from the network.
Solution: You implement a Hyper-V Replica between Host2 and Host4.
Does this meet the goal?

  • A. Yes
  • B. No

B is the correct answer. The solution "implement a Hyper-V Replica" is not the right action to the question... Because you need to move the vm's... Reading the questions is everything...

I agree. Also there is a downtime with Hyper-V Replica failover. It is a live migration question from Microsoft. Correct answer is B - No

B is MY answer. Tricky but here is my reasoning. Replica sets up a copy at Host 4 (I have no problem being different CPUs) but in order for the 'move' requirement in the question, I would need to shut off the original and manually fire up the replica, causing a disconnection in the network. This event right here fails another requirement in the question, ' without causing the virtual machines to disconnect from the network'. FYI, failovers for Replicas are not automatic but rather manual (Test, Planned, Unplanned).

synchronous replication supports automatic failover

For stretched clusters only, which is not specified in the question. So, answer B is the right answer.

shouldn’t use hv replica for moving vm

Can anyone pls clarify and explain this question? In Host 2 , the processor is of AMD company but in Host 4, the processor of Intel company, and both the storages on Host2 and Host4 are local, so is this the main reason why, storage replica can't occur between both Hosts? Pls correct me If I am wrong

The scenario suggest you want to move the VM not replicate it. Even Though Hyper-V Replica can be done between different CPU family you still have not moved the machine as you still have a copy in host 2. B

When the above replication process is not possible? Is there any role for switch? Like switches must of same name, like that?

B. No VM needs to be off in HyperV Replica failover, so there is downtime. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/manage/set-up-hyper-v-replica

Hyper V Replica creates a copy of a live virtual machine to a replica offline virtual machine. The scenario states moving a VM which Hyper V Replica does not do.

Disregard my last comment. Copying is the same concept as moving the VMs but the answer is still (B) because their is a pause when using Hyper-V

But a pause is not a disconnection which the question addresses. I think the answer is A. I think they are looking for the student to understand that Storage Replica is hardware agnostic.

The answer should be A - Yes (Hyper-V Replica works differently. With Hyper-V Replica, the changes to storage of a VM are replicated from the source to the target every five minutes and replayed into the replica virtual hard disk (VHD) on the target side, but the VM isn't running on the target. In the event of a failover, the VM is stopped and restarted on the target, which means there's no problem associated with moving a running OS between processor architectures since the OS is stopped and restarted. This means with Hyper-V Replica, the source and target Hyper-V servers can be running different processors such as Intel on the source and AMD on the target.)

A is the wrong option, one of the question requirements is : "' without causing the virtual machines to disconnect from the network'", in the scenario you are suggesting there is downtime.

A 64-bit processor with second-level address translation (SLAT) Hardware-assisted virtualization. This is available in processors that include a virtualization option - specifically processors with Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) technology. Hardware-enforced Data Execution Prevention (DEP) must be available and enabled. For Intel systems, this is the XD bit (execute disable bit). For AMD systems, this is the NX bit (no execute bit).
